Pályafutását a Los Angeles-i "Stone Poneys" tagjaként kezdte. 1966-ban a Capitol kiadóhoz szerződtek. 1969. óta szólista, 1974-től Peter Asher producerrel dolgozik. 1976-ban Európában turnézott. 1977-78-ban "The Trio" néven Emmylou Harisszel és Dolly Partonnal készített felvételeket. 1979-ben újhullámos lemeze készült a Los Angeles-i "Cretones" együttessel, 1984-ben dzsessz-örökzöldeket játszott Nelson Riddle zenekarával. 1991-ben Aaron Neville nagylemezét hangszerelte és háttérénekese volt. 1975-ben megkapta a "Legjobb Countryénekesnő"-nek járó Grammy-díjat az "I Can't Help It If I'm Still in Love with You"-ért. 1976-ban a "Hasten Down the Wind", 1990-ben "Don't Know Much" (Aaron Neville-lel) című lemezéért kapott Grammy-díjat a "Legjobb Popalbum"-ért. Nagylemezeiből: "Silk Pursue", "Heart Like a Wheel", "A Retrospective", "For Sentimental Reasons". 1981-ben a "Pirates of Penzance" főszerepét játszotta a Brodwayn és filmen is.
