"Prologue: Journey from India to Yorkshire" from "The Secret Garden"

Lucy Simon - Marsha Norman
The Secret Garden
Prologue: Journey from India to Yorkshire Meredith Braun, Company

MARY, spoken]
How strange and quiet it is. It sounds as if there is nobody in the bungalow but me
And that snake

[sung]
A'o jadu ke mausam
A'o garmiyo ke din
A'o mantra tantra yantra
Us ki bimari hata'o

[LIEUTENANT, spoken]
Major. There's a girl in here
[MAJOR]
Do you mean alive?
[MARY]
My name is Mary Lennox. Why has nobody come for me? Have I been forgotten?
[LIEUTENANT]
The cholera. They're all dead, Miss
[MARY]
Mother? Father?
[LIEUTENANT]
All dead, Miss. I'm sorry, Miss

[LIEUTENANT, sung]
Can it be a dream?
[MAJOR]
Surely it must seem
Like a frightful dream
[LIEUTENANT]
How can this be true?
Why did no one come?
[MAJOR]
Why did no one see
Where a girl might be?
[BOTH]
What is there to do?
[COMPANY]
There's a girl whom no one sees
There's a girl who's left alone
There's a heart that beats in silence for the life she's never known
For the life she's never known

[Mrs. MEDLOCK, spoken]
Good evening, Major. I'm Mrs. Medlock, Mr. Craven's housekeeper. Is this the girl?
[MAJOR]
Yes, ma'am. And here are her papers, and the death certificates
[Mrs. MEDLOCK]
How is it, Major, that everyone in the house contracted the cholera except Mary Lennox?
[MAJOR]
Could be, ma'am, they didn't spend any time with the girl. Always giving parties, they were
[Mrs. MEDLOCK]
Well then, thank you, Major
[MAJOR]
I've spent two weeks with her now, and I think she's the most disagreeable child I've ever met. She's lucky we found this uncle Archie, or I'd be taking her to an orphanage

[Mrs. MEDLOCK, sung]
Such a sour thing
I'd expected tears or complaints or fears
Seems she doesn't care
What her life will bring
Or is this the cost of the love she's lost?
See how people stare
[COMPANY (Mrs. MEDLOCK)]
There's a girl who no one sees (Who no one sees)
There's a girl who's left alone (Who's left alone)
There's a heart that beats in silence for the life she's never known
For the life she's never known

For the feeling of a family
For the safety of a home
In a world that is rushing past her
There's a girl alone

[Mrs. MEDLOCK, spoken]
Why you're being brought to Misselthwaite I'll never know. Your uncle isn't going to trouble himself about you, he never troubles himself about anyone. He was a hunchback, you see, and a sour young man he was. Got no good of all his money till he was married, to your mother's sister, Lily. She was a sweet pretty thing. Nobody thought she'd marry him, but marry him she did, and it wasn't for his money either. But then when she died...
[MARY]
How did she die?
[Mrs. MEDLOCK]
It made him worse than ever. He travels most of the time now. When he does come home, all he does is wander the hallways and talk to ghosts

[CONDUCTOR]
All change, Pickering station!

[Mrs. MEDLOCK (company), sung]
None of us can know (none of us can know)
Where a girl could go suffered such a blow
Pity her the pain (pity her the pain)
Now she stands so still (now she stands so still)
And she looks so old, not a hand to hold (not a hand to hold)
Pity she's so plain
[COMPANY]
There's a girl who no one sees
There's a girl who's left alone
There's a heart that beats in silence for the life she's never known
For the life she's never known

[MARY, spoken]
Is it always so ugly here?
[Mrs. MEDLOCK]
That's the moor, it is. Miles and miles of wild land that nothing grown on but heather and gorse and broom, and nothing lives on but wild ponies and sheep
[MARY]
What is that awful howling sound?
[Mrs. MEDLOCK]
That's the wind, blowing through the bushes. They call it wuthering, that sound. But look there, that tiny light far across there. That'll be the gate it will. That'll be Misselthwaite

Mary Lennox, this is Dr. Craven, your uncle's brother
[Dr. Craven]
You're to take her to her room. My brother doesn't want to see her
[Mrs. MEDLOCK]
Very good, Doctor

[MARTHA, sung]
A girl who doesn't cry
Standing all alone
Will she ever learn that others here are lonely?
A girl who needs a home
Looking up at me
I wonder if she knows that she's a girl who no one sees

[Mrs. MEDLOCK, spoken]
Well, here you are then. This room and the next are where you'll live

[COMPANY, sung]
There's a girl who no one sees
[Mrs. MEDLOCK, spoken]
But don't expect there to be people to talk to you

[COMPANY, sung]
There's a girl who's left alone
[Mrs. MEDLOCK, spoken]
When you're in the house, don't go wandering about. Your uncle won't have it
[MARY]
Won't have it

[COMPANY women (men), sung]
There's a heart that beats in silence for the life she's never known
For the feeling of a family
For the safety of a home
In a world that is rushing past her (In a world that is rushing past her)
Oh a world that is rushing past her (Oh a world that is rushing past her)
In a world that is running on and on and on
She stands alone

[Mrs. MEDLOCK, spoken]
